He gave her an hour, and when she still hadn’t come out, he thought about knocking on the Stone’s door and asking her parents for help, but initiating a conversation between Laramee and her emotionally estranged father seemed a risky option right now, and despite Laramee’s anemic assurance that the last conversation had been good, Jamie felt sure it had been one step on the downward spiral that led to the day’s outcome.

Jamie considered the burdens he knew she was carrying—the ranch, her parents, Sutton, Tyler’s death, and her friend Brenda’s son. Those heavy worries were enough to crush anyone, and he knew he’d probably added a few others to that list—the confusion caused by him and their kiss. He didn’t want her to feel rejected again, but the truth was less noble than that. He’d wanted to kiss her since the moment she bandaged his hand. But he had his own issues—concerns that made it difficult to commit to another woman. It was less about Victoria and more about their painful history. He didn’t want to repeat old mistakes, and yet he’d given Laramee a hollow kiss without any promise or expression of affection. His head and heart hurt, and his nerves were on edge. He was smothering in this small space, but he was afraid to leave Laramee.

What should I do?

The simple answer came to him. Just keep caring.

He could do that.

But how? What did she need?

He thought about the sweet silly hour spent telling knock-knock jokes, and he headed for the cupboards, not certain what he was looking for. The available entertainment was grossly limited—a few dusty boardgames in dubious condition, some puzzles in tattered boxed that portended they were likely missing pieces, a ruffled stack of paper, and some random, partially dried up art supplies. One other option presented itself–a guitar hanging on the wall. It inspired a memory from days gone by, of campfire singing by the lake when he was young. He pulled the battered instrument down and attempted to tune it. The third, or G-string was missing, and the five remaining metal strings had lost much of their spring, producing a dull sound at best. The tone was perfect for his use.

The old guitar proved Laramee right about his soft, paper-pushing hands. The strings cut into his tender fingertips, making it hard to produce solid notes. All the better, he decided with a
